Luxury all-inclusive holidays: what to check before booking

A generous package can make a holiday feel effortless. The key is knowing exactly what your chosen rate includes.

Start with the package, not the label

When comparing luxury all-inclusive holidays, ask for the inclusions attached to your exact dates and room category. A description of the resort is useful inspiration, but the booking terms are what you need for a like-for-like comparison. Decide what you want covered: relaxed lunches, evening dining, drinks, activities or simply the freedom to stop thinking about each bill.

Look closely at dining

Ask which restaurants are included, whether reservations are required and whether any menus carry supplements. Check how many visits you can make during your stay and what happens if a restaurant is unavailable. If food is a major part of your holiday, send your dietary requirements before choosing the hotel. Room service, private dining and special events should each be checked separately.

Be specific about drinks

Rather than asking whether drinks are included, ask which drinks and where. Request clarity on wine by the glass, bottled wine, cocktails, premium spirits, minibar replenishment and drinks ordered through room service. You do not need the longest drinks list; you need a package that covers what you actually enjoy.

Compare the room you will spend time in

Set out the room requirements alongside the dining plan. Do you want a separate living area, a quiet terrace, direct beach access or a private pool? For families, confirm occupancy, bedding and children’s charges. For couples, ask about the atmosphere around the room as well as the wider resort. An appealing package should not distract from an unsuitable room.

Check the costs outside the package

Request a total that identifies transfers, taxes and any compulsory charges. Ask separately about spa treatments, excursions, motorised water sports and childcare; do not assume these are included. Marriott’s own all-inclusive guidance distinguishes included amenities from additional charges, illustrating why the individual resort and package terms matter.

All-inclusive or breakfast only?

Build two realistic totals using the same room and dates. Add the meals and drinks you expect to buy to the breakfast-only quote, then compare that with the package. If you plan to spend most evenings away from the hotel, flexibility may matter more than extensive inclusions. If you want to settle in and dine on property, a clearly defined package may suit your plans better.

A useful enquiry checklist

Send your dates, party size, children’s ages, preferred destinations and overall hotel budget. Add what you would like included and any dining priorities. Ask for the cancellation conditions and the complete price in writing before committing.
